Q&A with Club Director Dennis Hohenshelt

By Phillyball

What drew you to volleyball and ultimately led up to becoming a club director?

My HS Team had boys volleyball where I learned the game. I coach Men’s Volleyball at Penn State and Women’s Volleyball at Penn State where we won 4 National Championships.

What do you love about volleyball in the Philly area?

That there is a genuine passion and love for the sport and people just love playing the game.

When it comes to your own development as a leader, what are you most interested in accomplishing next?

I want to continue to build up the volleyball community and develop outreach to all parts of the volleyball community, not just young females.

What resources do you recommend to help players and parents boost their volleyball IQ?

Volleyball is as popular as it has ever been and it is on TV all of the time. When you get a chance, watch it. You will fall in love and learn a lot.

Any advice for parents and players when it comes to choosing a new club or deciding whether to stay with their current club?

Find a club that wants to develop skills and that is a priority. Individual skill development leads to good teams which leads to winning, but it all has to do with skill development.

If you could give one piece of advice to parents, what would it be?

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the experience.
