How to Evaluate a Club Volleyball Offer: A Practical Guide for Parents and Players

Use the Four C's - coaching, club, commitment, and costs - to compare a club volleyball offer and decide whether it fits your athlete.

Choosing the right club volleyball team can be both exciting and overwhelming. Whether it’s your first offer or your fifth, knowing how to evaluate your options is key to finding the right fit. It’s about more than just the team’s win record — it’s about the **Four C’s**: **Coaching, Club, Commitment, and Costs**. Here’s how to break it all down, with questions to ask and factors to consider along the way. We've created a downloadable [Club Offer Evaluation Form](https://phillyball.short.gy/offer-form) you can use to track your responses!

### 📋Coaching: Who’s Leading the Way? The coach (or coaches) will have a huge impact on your athlete’s experience. Look beyond credentials to understand their **coaching style and values**. * **Experience:** How long have they been coaching club volleyball? Do they have a track record of developing athletes at your child’s level? * **Philosophy:** Are they focused on winning, skill development, character, or all three? Does that match your priorities? * **Coach-to-player ratio:** Will your athlete get individual attention, or will they get lost in the shuffle? * **Turnover:** Are coaches staying with the club long term? High turnover can be a red flag. * **Communication:** Do they communicate with both players and parents clearly and respectfully? **Tip:** Ask for examples of how the coach handles conflict, playing time, and mistakes during games.

### 👏Club: What’s the Culture? Each club has a different vibe — and not all are the right fit for your family. * **Reputation:** What are the people you trust in your volleyball community saying about this club, and do they have concrete examples? Online reviews can offer some insight (by the way, if you have experience with clubs, please share your review in our [Find a Club section](https://phillyball.com/find-club) to help others make an informed decision). For the newer Philly clubs, this is unknown, so avoid assumptions based on rumors — leave this section blank on your Offer Evaluation Form. * **Culture fit:** Is it intense and competitive, or supportive and developmental? How does that description jive with your expectations? Will it motivate you or stress you out? * **Communication:** Are you getting timely updates, clear expectations, and transparency? * **Facilities:** Where do they practice, and what’s the gym environment like? Can you commit to driving there and back multiple times per week? **Tip:** Ask the coach how they’d describe the culture and why (then ask yourself if that aligns with what you’ve experienced in open gyms and tryouts). Ask what percentage of returning players they expect on your team and in the club overall for the coming season. And of course, feel free to get opinions from someone you know who’s already been part of the club. **Be careful not to let other people’s biases be your deciding factor — your instincts are more important!**

### ⏰ Commitment: What’s the Real Time Investment? Before you sign, understand what life will look like week to week and month to month. * **Practice hours:** How many hours per week are expected? * **Travel time:** How far is the practice facility from your home? Will it be a daily strain? * **Tournaments:** How many weekends are committed to travel? How far do they go? * **Off-court expectations:** Are there team meetings, private lessons, or workouts required? **Tips:** Confirm (don’t assume) whether the facility where you tried out will be the same gym where you practice, because that isn’t always the case with Philly clubs. If it’s different, check out the location and drive time in Waze or swing by in-person — find out if it would be a pro or a con! Next, map out a sample week with practices, school, homework, and downtime. Is it realistic?

### 💸 Costs: What’s the Full Financial Picture? Club volleyball can be a major investment. Make sure you understand **everything that’s included — and what’s not**. * **Club fees:** What’s the base cost? When are payments due? * **Uniforms:** Are they included or separate? * **Extras:** Are there added costs for media day, team bonding events, Hudl or BallerTV, recruiting support, or additional clinics? Are these extras mandatory or optional? * **Travel:** Hotel stays, flights, and meals are out-of-pocket, so do your best to estimate the cost per tournament. Keep in mind, some tournaments will have Stay to Play rules that require you to reserve a room as part of a room block, which can be more expensive than finding one on your own. **Tip:** Ask for a cost breakdown and compare offers side by side.

### ⚖️ Pros & Cons: Put It All Together Once you’ve gathered the facts, take time to reflect as a family. Every offer has trade-offs — the key is knowing **which factors matter most to you**. Use a simple chart or make a pros and cons list. Then give the offer a rating (1–5) based on your overall impression.

### 📝 Final Thoughts The right team can boost confidence, skill, and love for the game — and reduce family stress along the way. Don’t feel pressured to say “yes” right away, especially if you’re awaiting other offers. Take the time to evaluate offers carefully and choose the one that fits your goals, values, and lifestyle. And don’t hesitate to ask questions or reply to follow-up texts so the coaches know you’re taking the offer seriously and not ghosting them! We’ve made it easier to think through this process with a downloadable **[Club Offer Evaluation Form](https://phillyball.short.gy/offer-form)** where you can review and track all the Four C’s of club volleyball! **Remember:** The best choice is the one that helps you / your athlete grow — not just as a player, but as a person. **Good luck!**
